Post Fight Depression

“What comes up must come down”

The build up to and competing in a combat sport can release some of the greatest highs you will ever experience. The slow release of adrenalin on the build up to competition with a huge dump just before you compete, and that incredible feeling when your hand is raised all leads to what can only be described as an incredible high!!

What is not commenly discussed though is the aftermath of this high. There can only be one place your body can go from this and that is down, you have taken your body to its peak and it is going to drop. Fighters commonly struggle after competition due to this effect, your body has a come down and it can make you feel like shit, to put it bluntly!

I have seen fighters struggle to get back motivated and back in the gym, I have also experienced this myself usually it is worse after a win due to the increase in adrenalin. Below are some tips to help regain focus and push through this slump:

1. Analyse your performance, this is especially important after a win as most people don’t bother as they don’t see the need. Watch the video spot your mistakes and start to concentrate on improving them.

2. Get back in the gym and routine as soon as possible, the more time you have off the harder it is to get back on the wagon as such.

3. Don’t spend 2 weeks binge eating because you can! The increase in sugar contet and all the crap you put in your body will only make you feel worse, meaning you will struggle to get back motivated. 1-2 days of having a blow out is acceptable, 3 months is only going to cause you problems!

4. Set yourself new goals and targets you can focus on and aim to achieve (Goal setting should be a constant thing throughout life)

5. If you are really struggling Saint John’s Wart is a natural anti depresent and can help for a couple of weeks after the fight. Obviously speak to your Dr before pursuing this course of action.

Just a few tips to help you guys and girls through what can be the toughest time to find motivation!!

Right Martial Arts Gym for you!!

Walking through the doors of your first martial arts facility can be a daunting task. When deciding on what gym is correct for yourself you may want to follow the below tips:

1. Most gyms offer a FREE trial take advantage of them all. Try each gym and find the place that best suites you!

2. Speak to the coach ask them lots of questions, you will soon get a feeling as to whether the coach is passionate about what they do.

3. All GOOD gyms should have a beginners/fundamental program if they don’t, the gym is probably not for you!

4. The sessions should have a structure! If they jump from teaching you a punch, to arm bar, to x-guard sweep all in the same 1hr slot the club is best avoided.

5. The head coach/instructors training/lineage should be easily followed i.e. if you can’t find any information on the head coach and there training past then they are probably full of BS!!

Simple tips but these will help find a club with your best interests at heart! Enjoy your training!!
